How do, guys and dolls! As many of you know, I’ve been conversing on Twitter, offering my daily tweets of half-wit wisdom. As often as possible, I like to be my own gal and share my take on the world, but every now and then I can’t resist mentioning some mutually minded quotes (always giving credit where credit is due) and also some of my favorite 50’s ads and fads.
The rose-colored champagne glasses were brimming over with kitsch advice; all the things that seemed so important in the era. How to be the most charming and debonair gentlemen and ladies in the social whirl of cocktail parties, dances and soirees. The Old Fitzgerald whiskey bottle that became a brass candle holder, the cars that were deemed handsome on the highway while remaining husky and smooth in the hills, homes that were designed for gracious living by being enticed to cover the refrigerators with plaid fabric and eat off of fiberglass dinnerware. The undergarments were more rubber than lace and even guided missiles had finishing schools!
The real charm of it all was that it was meant to be a true wish for a better society. The exchange of social niceties and mores were in a naive and innocent way intended to encourage one to be the best they could be, although they now appear sometimes incorrect and misguided. All in all, as I continue to look at yesterday and today, I see how much we have changed, and how much we stay the same.
Toodles,
Barbara Jean Coast
